Education is a cornerstone of our company. Our CEO and many of our team members are educators as well. We have several CPC-I (certified professional coding instructors) and staff with degrees in education.
Our CEO is the author of the CRC® (Certified Risk Adjustment Coder) curriculum that is offered through the AAPC nationally, and we offer this program at ionHealthcare® for our clients. Besides the AAPC, we are the only other organization where this curriculum may be obtained.
Besides offering live, in-person training on site, we also have a proprietary web based platform for continuing educational courses. We have the ability to create topics on a variety of subjects and customize training for clients. We also can assign large volumes of people to courses and track their completion and participation.
Some of the common programs we offer include, but are not limited to:
- CRC® (Certified Risk Adjustment Coder) curriculum training (2-day boot camp)
- ICD-10-CM training for coders and providers with the provider track focusing on clinical documentation improvement
- Fraud, Waste, and Abuse training
- Social Media
- Clinical Documentation Improvement
- Risk Adjustment training with tracks specifically for coders and separate tracks designed for providers focusing on clinical documentation improvement, and
- 5-star series diagnosis coding programs

Become a medical coder
While we have many well-known and talented educators & instructors, there has been a recent push from the State Council of Higher Education of Virginia to prevent medical coding instructors from teaching unless they are registered formally as a school by the state of Virginia. We also recognize that those decision makers likely are not familiar with the medical coding curriculums. While there are many such registered schools to include career colleges and trade schools, we strongly encourage you to ensure that they prepare students for a national exam under AAPC or AHIMA as a final goal. Medical coders must have passed a national exam through the AAPC or AHIMA for most any medical coding job. Having a “certificate” from a trade or career school is not the same as being a “Certified” medical coder.
Sadly many of these schools do not prepare students for the exam and many take advantage of uninformed students by requiring prerequisites, driving up the total cost of the medical coding program overall. The PMCC (Professional Medical Coding Curriculum) offered by the AAPC utilizes approved instructors (CPC-I) for the PMCC program that prepares students for the AAPC certifying exam.
Due to these changes, and our commitment to assist new coding students, we have carefully chosen a very reputable organization that offers courses online for either AAPC or AHIMA preparation. We have found that in comparison to other programs, students completing their courses score better on exams and are more prepared for their first medical coding job.
